You might expect the former home of the master of the Cutty Sark to be a little special, and it is, with sumptuous fittings, terrific creek views and a central location in a timeless Norfolk village.
With its elegant exterior, rich interior and historical heritage – Captain Woodget, master of the famous Cutty Sark, once lived here – you may not feel the desire to leave your superb holiday property. Yet that would be to miss out on one of North Norfolk’s most interesting and attractive regions. Though it is home a fabulous community pub, The Hero, Burnham Overy Staithe lacks many traditional village amenities, but it more than makes up for this with a laid-back ambience and a picture-postcard creek flecked with colourful sailing boats. Further around the coast is Holkham with its magisterial beach and nature reserve, while Burnham Market and Wells provide opportunities for those seeking some retail therapy.
You enter through the front door into a hallway that leads to the dining room, where you’ll find a solid wood table and seating for eight. Just off this room is the kitchen equipped with all you need for a holiday break including microwave and dishwasher. The ground floor also houses a twin bedroom with French doors leading out to the lawn, plus a desk and chair, and plenty of hanging space in the built-in wardrobe. A distinctive, wooden spiral staircase (relatively steep) hints at the nautical pedigree of the property’s famous former owner (Captain Woodget). It leads up to the first-floor accommodation that’s dominated by a marvellous lounge with grandstand views out over the harbour, creek and marshes. You could sit for hours watching coastal life from the sofa, chairs or cushioned window bench, though a DVD offers on-screen entertainment. Two homely bedrooms – one with a super king-size bed, the other a bunk room with sea views– and a bathroom with bath and shower over the bath and WC complete the upstairs accommodation.
A large garden (shared with Flagstaff East) features a huge lawn, mature trees and picnic tables. Off-street parking is available for three cars. If you own your own small boat, this is a perfect property as there is plenty of space to leave your craft near the accommodation.
Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.
