Fort William lies at the foot of Ben Nevis, in a scenic location on the banks of Loch Linnhe, a tidal sea loch. To the north of the town, near the railway station and a large supermarket, the Underwater Centre is a subsea training and trials facility. A pier stretches out into the loch here and to the left of the pier, as you face the loch, lies a small shingle beach with views down Loch Linnhe and of the surrounding hills and mountains.
Behind the beach stand the remains of the Old Fort, which gave the town its name. A couple of information boards tell something of the history of this site, which played an important role during the tragic history of the Jacobite uprisings.
The waters of Loch Linnhe are enjoyed by all kinds of watersport enthusiasts. Visitors can try open water swimming, with or without a wetsuit, or engage in fishing for species such as Pollock, mackerel, and conger eel.
