Southsea East Beach stretches from Old Portsmouth to Eastney, offering a vibrant and traditional resort experience. The beach is primarily composed of flinty shingle, with a stretch of sand exposed at low tide. The beach slopes fairly rapidly into the sea, and is backed by a promenade and a recreation area featuring a popular canoe lake.
The name "Southsea" originates from the 16th-century Southsea Castle. In the early 19th century, Southsea became a fashionable destination for bathing and other seaside leisure activities. Today, the town remains a lively destination with plenty of visitor attractions, including the D-Day Museum, Cumberland House Natural History Museum, and the Blue Reef Aquarium.
The beach offers a range of activities, including swimming, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. Paddleboard rentals are available during the summer months, and lifeguards are on duty to ensure safety for swimmers and beachgoers. The promenade is perfect for walking, cycling, or skating, and the area is lined with cafes, restaurants, and ice cream shops. Canoe Lake, located behind the beach, is a popular spot for families, offering a play area and opportunities to see various marine wildlife.
From the beach, visitors can enjoy views out across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight, as well as the series of four large forts known as "Palmerston's Folly", built in the 1860s to defend against the risk of invasion.
The area offers a variety of dining experiences, from casual beach cafes to more upscale restaurants, with many serving fresh seafood and traditional British fare.
