Although storms were predicted, the fishing boats of Eyemouth, St Abbs and other coastal villages set sail on 14 October 1881. Due to the storms, 189 did not return.
The majority of the lost came from Eyemouth up the coast, but St Abbs lost 3 people.
Memorials like this one feature in the villages that lost men. They represent women and children looking out to sea on that horrible day.
