Fontygary Bay features a wide pebble beach backed by striking cliffs, making it a popular destination for swimming during the summer months when a lifeguard service is available. The beach is surrounded by fields, a caravan park, and various facilities such as a cafe and toilets. Parking is available along Fontygary Road, a short walk from the beach. The nearby village of Rhoose offers additional amenities, including shops, accommodations, and a train station with regular services to Cardiff.
Located approximately three miles southwest of Barry, Fontygary Bay is easily accessible through the Fontygary Leisure Park, a popular caravan park that offers a range of family-friendly activities and amenities. The beach can be reached by following a path that winds behind the main reception complex, leading down to the shingle beach and impressive cliffs.
At low tide, the large Font-y-Gary Cave becomes visible, providing a unique opportunity for exploration. Visitors can also take a scenic walk along the coast path, leading to the fascinating remains of the Aberthaw Lime Kilns or towards Porthkerry. However, it is essential to exercise caution due to the risk of rock falls caused by erosion, and walking under the foot of the cliffs is strongly discouraged.
The beach is dog-friendly all year round, and visitors can enjoy walking along the clifftop paths with their pets. The Fontygary Leisure Park offers a range of amenities, including a caravan park, cafe, and toilets.
Fontygary Bay is adjacent to the Wales Coast Path.
