Llantwit Major Beach, also known as Cwm Colhuw, is situated at the end of a valley and features a mix of rock strata, pebbles, and sand. The beach is backed by dramatic cliffs, which create a breathtaking backdrop and offer stunning views across the Bristol Channel towards Minehead and Exmoor. The terrain can be challenging for those with mobility problems due to the rocky and slippery surface.
The beach is a popular spot for dog walkers and families who come to hunt for crabs and other marine wildlife in the rockpools. It is also known for its excellent surfing conditions, making it a hotspot for both beginners and experienced surfers. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular activities, with equipment rental and guided tours available. A lifeguard service is provided during the summer months, ensuring a safe experience for beachgoers. A beach café offers food, drink, and souvenirs, while a separate toilet block provides convenient facilities.
Llantwit Major Beach is renowned for its Jurassic fossils, which can be found at low tide. The beach's rock strata and cliff face also feature fossils, making it an interesting spot for fossil enthusiasts and those interested in geology.
Dogs are welcome on the beach outside of the peak summer months, but are not allowed on the beach from May to September.
Llantwit Major Beach is on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
