Southerndown Beach is a beautiful rural beach situated at the foot of cliffs on the Heritage Coast, offering spectacular views surrounded by farmland. The beach is a popular spot for surfers and canoeists, and a local kiosk serves ice cream and refreshments.
The bay faces south-west towards the Bristol Channel, measuring approximately 1 kilometre at low tide and narrowing to approximately 200 metres at high tide. The beach is sandy, with a shingle bank at the high tide mark, backed by steep sandstone cliffs. The village of Southerndown is located north of the bay.
The coast waters and coastal belt are listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, confirming the high conservation status of the area.
The beach is popular for swimming, and water sports such as canoeing and surfing. It also features excellent rock pools that can be explored at low tide, and the rocks are rich in fossils, making it an ideal spot for fossil hunters. A path runs along the cliff tops towards Ogmore to the north-west, offering good views out over the Bristol Channel. A car park with toilets is located above the beach, and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Visitor Centre is nearby.
There are specific rules regarding dogs on the beach. From May 1 to September 30, dogs are not allowed on the beach, but from October 1 onwards, dogs are welcome back on the beach.
Southerndown Beach is on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
