Porthcawl Sandy Bay is a sheltered sandy beach situated within walking distance of Porthcawl town centre. The bay faces south towards the Bristol Channel and stretches approximately 650 metres in length. It is bounded by the harbour and promenade to the west, Coney Bay Amusement Park to the north, and Rhych Point to the east. The beach is characterised by its sandy and gently sloping terrain.
The beach offers a range of activities, including surfing and swimming. At low tide, there can be several hundred metres of sand separating the surf and the promenade behind the beach. The eastern end of the beach features a small headland with rock pools that can be explored at low tide to discover marine wildlife. The beach is backed by the Coney Beach amusement park and entertainment complex, which provides various activities for children, such as donkey rides and bouncy castles.
The beach is easily accessible, with a ramp located next to the amusement park. Parking facilities are available alongside the promenade, including roadside parking and a car park on the grassy area behind it. The nearby town centre of Porthcawl offers a range of shops, places to stay, and places to eat, as well as a museum showcasing the town's history. The beach is dog-friendly during the winter months, although restrictions apply from May to September.
