Herne Bay is situated on the north Kent coast, close to the town centre, and features a shingle beach with some sand exposed at low water. The beach is located to the east of the harbour and Clock Tower, and neighbours a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A promenade runs along above the beach, accompanied by grassed areas behind.
The resort boasts a range of facilities, including a pier, a promenade, and a Victorian bandstand. Visitors can enjoy excellent seafood restaurants, as well as traditional seaside amenities like fish and chip shops and wooden beach huts.
East of the town, beyond the breakwater known as Neptune's Arm, lies The King's Hall, an Edwardian seafront venue with nearby parking. The stretch of coast between The King's Hall and Reculver is popular with walkers, kayakers, boaters, and crabbers. The beach itself is mainly shingle, with a number of groynes extending into the sea. Behind the sea wall, grassy slopes known as The Downs offer a haven for birdlife, with several footpaths criss-crossing the area. This region has been designated a Special Protection Area for birds.
Herne Bay East Beach, located to the right of Neptune's Arm, stretches towards Reculver and offers a more rural experience. This side of the beach is popular with sailing and kayaking enthusiasts, and is dog-friendly all year round. Visitors can enjoy long walks along the coast, taking in the cliffs and romantic ruins of Reculver Castle.
Herne Bay is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
