The beach is mainly sand with shallow water at high tide and is situated near the mouth of the River Tweed estuary. It joins with Spittal beach and is part of a larger stretch of coastline that runs from the River Tweed to the cliffs at Bears Head.
Spittal Quay lies close to the mouth of the River Tweed, immediately below Berwick-upon-Tweed. The closest parking is at the end of Sandstell Road, from where visitors can access the estuary beach or take the coastal footpath south towards Spittal Promenade and beach.
Facilities can be found in Spittal or in the ancient town Berwick-upon-Tweed. The beach itself offers plenty of opportunities for spotting wading and other birds, and if lucky, even a seal offshore. The sandy beach at Spittal is family-friendly, with a splash park and children's play area on the beach front, as well as a traditional arcade and cafe for snacks and refreshments.
Once a busy seaside day out for Victorian holidaymakers, the beach is still popular with visitors and locals alike. The long sandy beach is backed by a promenade and is a perfect spot for bracing walks looking out across the North Sea.
Spittal Quay is within a Northumberland coast area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering stunning views and a unique coastal experience.
Spittal Quay Beach is adjacent to the Northumberland Coast Path.
