West Runton Beach is a quiet and often overlooked destination, situated between Sheringham and Cromer. The beach is a mix of sand and shingle, with a large expanse of fine sand revealed at low tide, along with numerous rockpools. The beach is popular with surfers, and the Norfolk Coast Path runs past the beach, making it an ideal stop-off spot for walkers.
The beach is backed by a holiday park and features a beach cafe, toilets, and a clifftop car park. The area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique geology, including the largest chalk reef in Europe, which makes it popular with divers and surfers. The cliffs also contain a host of fossils, including the famous West Runton elephant, a nearly complete fossilized steppe mammoth skeleton discovered in 1990.
In 2017, West Runton Beach was awarded Blue Flag status, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, safety, and water quality. The beach is dog friendly all year round and offers a range of activities, including swimming and exploring rock pools.
