East Runton Beach is a long, sandy beach backed by sloping sandstone cliffs and countryside beyond. The beach is of interest to geologists and fossil hunters alike, with a stretch of the largest chalk reef in Europe, making it a popular spot for snorkelers. The cliff face is also home to a wealth of fossils. The beach is pebbly towards the high tide mark, but as the tide goes out, acres of sand are revealed.
The beach has a seasonal lifeguard service, rock-pools, and is one of Norfolk's most popular surf spots. On the cliff-top overlooking the beach is the Surfers' Memorial, which commemorates three local surfers who died tragically young. The beach was awarded Blue Flag status in 2017, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, safety, and water quality.
The beach is great for picnics, kite flying, and when the tide is out, searching for fossils or rockpooling with the kids. The area is a wonderful spot for a caravan or camping holiday, with caravan parks and camp sites overlooking the sea front. East Runton village has plenty of amenities, including shops, a popular Tea Room, and local fish and chip shop. There are also several pubs, including The Fishing Boat and Sammy's Bar and Grill.
The village is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with interesting local places to visit, including Felbrigg Hall, Roman Camp Heath, and Incleborough Hill. East Runton beach is great for long walks with dogs all year round. There is parking at the top of the cliff with toilet facilities.
