Hemsby Beach is a 3km straight stretch of natural coastline, featuring a valley, dunes, and rock pools. The beach is backed by large grassy sand dunes, providing shelter and making it a good spot for sunbathing, walking, and playing in the sand. The beach is fairly wide and does not get too crowded, making it an ideal location for those seeking a relaxing day out.
The good water quality and presence of a lifeguard during the summer season make Hemsby Beach suitable for swimming, surfing, and canoeing. Visitors can also enjoy views over Scroby Sands windfarm from the beach. The beach is home to the remains of anti-tank blocks and a concrete bunker, which once formed part of the World War II coastal defences in the area.
Beach Road leads from the beach into Hemsby village, where a range of amusement arcades, funfairs, cafes, and other traditional seaside entertainments can be found. The beach is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is close to Winterton Dunes Nature Reserve, a good place to spot grey seals and a variety of interesting bird life.
The Hemsby Longshore Herring Festival is held each year in late August, celebrating the fishing traditions and heritage of the area. Visitors can sample delicious local Hemsby herring on the beach, cooked in a traditional way. The beach is dog friendly, although there are restrictions in place during the summer months.
