The Denes is a quiet shingle beach, backed by marshes and bordered by the mouth of the river Blyth on one side and the historical seaside town of Southwold on the other. The beach is located just off Ferry Road, with beach huts and toilets situated further north. This stretch of beach is a more rural and quieter alternative to the main Southwold beach.
The Denes offers a non-commercialised sand and shingle beach with an array of colourful huts, attracting visitors and residents alike. The beach has a full lifeguard service during the busy summer months and a special area reserved for water sports, including water skiing and windsurfing. Additionally, the refurbished Southwold Pier, which is privately owned, permits fishing.
A short walk from The Denes will take you to the Walberswick Nature Reserve, which boasts a mix of marsh and heathland. The charming village of Walberswick is also within easy walking distance, offering a range of amenities and attractions, including the famous "British Open Crabbing Championship". The Denes is also dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for pet owners.
The Denes is located just along Ferry Road from Southwold main beach and can be accessed by parking on the road and walking over the grassy dunes. At the southern end of the beach, you will find the mouth of the river Blythe, a holiday park, RNLI life station, and the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum.
Southwold The Denes Beach is on the Suffolk Heritage Coast.
