Burnham Jetty North Beach is situated north of the mouth of the river Parrett, overlooking the Bristol Channel. The beach is approximately 2.2 kilometres wide and is a mix of sand and mud, backed by a sea defence wall. The beach has a shallow slope and a very large tidal range, which can expose up to half a kilometre of beach at low tide. The rivers Brue and Parrett both flow into the Bristol Channel just south of the bathing water.
The beach is lined with a promenade featuring Victorian and Edwardian guest houses, and is a lively spot in the summer months, with donkey rides and other traditional seaside activities available. The beach is also home to Britain's shortest pier, which was built in 1911 and measures just over 100 ft (37 m) in length. The pier end pavilion is a popular spot, and the pier is a great place to start a stroll along the beach.
Burnham Main Beach, which is also known as Burnham Jetty North Beach, is an award-winning wide sandy beach with excellent water quality, making it safe for swimming. During the summer holidays, there are plenty of kids' entertainment activities available, and lifeguards are on duty during the holiday season. For watersports enthusiasts, there is a designated area for boats and jet skis nearby. The beach is also close to a variety of shops and cafes, and parking is available along the seafront.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 1st to September 30th, so visitors are advised to plan their trip accordingly.
