Berrow South Beach is part of a 6-mile stretch of sand and mudflats known as Berrow Flats, located between Burnham-on-Sea and Brean Down. The beach is characterised by a flat and sandy shoreline, backed by dunes. Visitors are warned of the dangers of sinking sands at low tide and advised to exercise caution when walking on the wet mudflats.
The beach is a popular destination for walkers, horse riders, fishermen, and beach sports enthusiasts. Fishing is permitted for three hours a day, either side of high tide. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including walking, windsurfing, sea angling, and horse riding. The beach entrance has public toilets, and there are cafes and bars nearby, such as the Sundowner Cafe and bar.
The beach is home to the wreck of the MV Nornen, a Norwegian Barque which ran aground in 1897 and is visible at low tide. The beach faces west, providing spectacular sunsets. The area is also known for its tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat.
Visitors can access the beach by car, with parking available on the beach or at the nearby nature reserve. The beach is dog-friendly, allowing dogs to run off-lead, although owners are advised to prevent them from venturing too far onto the mudflats.
