Ryhope Beach, situated just north of Seaham, has undergone significant changes due to coastal erosion. What was once a popular, sandy beach has been greatly reduced in size, and the remaining sand is now interspersed with rocks and pebbles from the eroded cliffs. The beach is a mixture of sandy patches, pebbles, and rocks, and its small size is a far cry from its former popularity.
The land around Ryhope village, where the beach is located, has a long history of farming dating back around a thousand years. Today, the village has several pubs and is home to the Ryhope Engine Museum. While there are no facilities directly on the beach, visitors can find places to eat and other amenities in nearby Seaham.
The beach is utilised by fishermen and dog walkers, and there are no dog restrictions in place. Visitors are advised to check tide times, which are posted at the access points to the beach. A small path leads to the beach, making it a great spot for exploring rockpools at low tide or simply taking in the views. The beach is also a popular destination for sea angling.
Ryhope Beach marks the border of Sunderland and Durham, and the Durham's Heritage Coastal Footpath runs behind the beach.
