Sunderland Hendon South Beach is a strip of sand and shingle located just to the south of the centre of Sunderland and the docks. The sloping beach features wooden groynes and rocky sea defences, and is backed by a sea wall with a promenade above. From the beach, visitors can enjoy views of the industrial buildings in the city and port area. A section of the England Heritage Coastal Path also passes the beach.
Sunderland offers a range of attractions and amenities, including the National Glass Centre, the Stadium of Light, and a museum. Visitors can also explore the city's shops, restaurants, and places to stay.
Located just north of Seaham, Ryhope Beach marks the border of Sunderland and Durham. Although it was once a popular seaside destination, the beach has decreased in size due to coastal erosion. A small path leads to the beach, which is ideal for exploring rockpools at low tide or taking in the views. Ryhope Beach is also a popular spot for sea angling, and there are no dog restrictions in place.
