Southwick Beach is a predominantly shingle beach situated near the historic Shoreham Harbour, where the River Adur enters the sea. The beach is a shingle spit deposited over time by longshore drift, blocking the southerly flow of the River Adur which turns east at this point and eventually meets the sea further along the coast. The pebble beach is predominantly groyned, gently sloping and offers a wide area for bathing with some sand exposed at low water.
The beach is used for fishing, windsurfing, and bathing, although there is no zoning here. A promenade behind the beach features a café, and concrete steps lead down to the beach. The beach is safe for swimming, and each year between May and the end of September, a designated swimming zone is marked with buoys. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the Carats Cafe Bar on the seafront.
Southwick Beach lies immediately to the east of historic Shoreham Harbour and is near to a variety of facilities and public transport. The beach is located on the border of East and West Sussex, making it easily accessible for visitors from both counties.
