Lyme Regis Front Beach is located to the west of Lyme Regis, a charming harbour town on the south coast of Devon. The beach is a sandy resort, approximately 760 metres wide, situated close to the town and sheltered by a curved breakwater known as The Cobb.
The Cobb, a historic harbour wall, dates back to the fourteenth century and has played a significant role in the town's development as an important port. The harbour is a popular spot for visitors, offering panoramic views, breathtaking scenery, and a range of activities, including sightseeing boat trips, fishing, and diving trips.
Access to the beach is available between the new RNLI station and the new slipway. The beach is sheltered by The Cobb, which also provides a picturesque backdrop for a day out. Visitors can walk along The Cobb, take in the views, and enjoy the scenery.
Lyme Regis is internationally recognised for its Jurassic cliffs, which contain a vast array of fossils that can be found along the foreshore. The town's unique geology has made it a popular destination for fossil hunters and those interested in geology.
Lyme Regis and The Cobb have also gained fame as the setting for the classic movie 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' (1981), starring Meryl Streep. The Cobb was famously used in the opening shot of the film, and the town's picturesque harbour has been featured in various other productions.
The beach is dog-friendly during the winter months, but restrictions apply from April to October. Visitors are advised to check the local guidelines before planning their trip.
Lyme Regis Front Beach is on the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
