Beer Beach is situated in a small cove, approximately 1.2 kilometres wide, and is made up of a pebble and sand beach backed by cliffs and the village of Beer. The beach is sheltered from most winds and offers lovely views, particularly from the nearby Jubilee gardens. The name "Beer" originates from the Old English translation of "grove", rather than any connection with the popular beverage.
The beach is part of the 95-mile Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and is protected by the white chalky cliffs of Beer Head, which form a cove that shields the beach from strong winds and waves. The beach is comprised of shingle and has a steep descent into deeper water, making it ideal for confident swimmers but requiring care due to the lack of lifeguard cover.
Visitors to Beer Beach can enjoy a range of facilities, including toilets, cafes, pubs serving local beers and ales, and restaurants specialising in seafood. There is limited parking adjacent to the beach, but a larger car park is available in the centre of the village, about 100 meters walk from the beach. Beach huts and deck chairs are available for hire along the beach front, and shops can be found in the seaside village. Visitors can also hire a boat or take a guided boating trip to explore the coast by sea, or walk along the South West Coast Path towards Seaton Beach.
Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1 October until 30 April, but are banned during the summer months. However, dogs are permitted on the eastern half of Beer beach all year round, while the western end has a dog ban from May 1st to September 30th.
The road leading down to the beach is very steep, and visitors should be aware of this when accessing the beach.
Beer Beach is on the East Devon Heritage Coast and the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
