The beach is situated in a bay and is formed by a large expanse of legally protected pebbles, with a wide stretch of sandy beach at its western end. The pebbles are protected by law, and it is an offence to remove them from the beach.
Access to the beach is available via two routes: a slope and steps from Connaught Gardens, known as Jacob's Ladder, and a level path from Sidmouth Town Beach. The historic ladder, which was first built in 1871, provides a picturesque and convenient way to descend to the beach.
The beach is approximately 490 metres wide and is backed by steep cliffs, with a path along the cliff connecting it to Sidmouth Town Beach. At low tide, the beach offers a large expanse of sand and plenty of rock pools, making it an excellent spot for young children.
Dogs are banned from the immediate area of Jacob's Ladder from May 1st to September 30th, but are allowed along the western end of the beach.
Sidmouth Jacobs Ladder Beach is on the East Devon Heritage Coast and the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
