Sidmouth Town Beach is a pebble beach, approximately 900 metres wide, with rock groynes backed by a promenade and the town of Sidmouth. The beach is formed by a large expanse of legally protected pebbles, with some lovely rock pools at its western end and cliffs overhanging the beach at the eastern end. An esplanade runs along its entire length, offering a pleasant walkway for visitors.
Sidmouth is situated on the south coast of Devon, about 15 miles from Exeter. The area extends for five kilometres inland to include Sidford and Sidbury. The beach is flanked by red-hued cliffs on both sides, and a strip of rich red sand is exposed at low tide.
Parking is available at various locations in the town, including a paying car park at the eastern end of the beach. The beach has a slipway at the eastern end, giving boats access to the sea, and kayaks and canoes are available for hire at the western end of the esplanade. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including paddling in the sea, sunbathing, and watersports such as SUPs and kayaking. Sailing and fishing are also popular activities.
There is no lifeguard on duty, and swimmers are advised not to swim beyond the marked buoys due to strong currents in the offshore breakwaters. Dogs are restricted from the main town beach from May 1 to September 30, but are allowed all year round by the lifeboat station at the eastern end of the beach.
The beach was awarded Blue Flag Status for the first time in 2020, recognising its high standards of water quality, safety, and environmental management. The beach is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which is known for its stunning natural beauty and geological significance.
Sidmouth Town Beach is on the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
