Budleigh Salterton Beach is a 2km long pebble beach, famous for its large smooth cobbles, which are a distinctive feature of the Jurassic Coast. The beach is situated at the mouth of the River Otter and is approximately one kilometre wide, backed by a promenade and cliffs. The beach is popular with families due to its calm and clean waters, making it perfect for bathing.
The beach offers a range of amenities, including three beach cafes, beach huts available for hire, and access to the nearby town of Budleigh Salterton. The quieter western end of the beach features large red cliffs, which date back to the Triassic period, around 240 million years ago. However, visitors are advised to take care when exploring this area due to frequent erosion and falling rock. The more popular eastern end of the beach is home to the Otter Estuary and its nature reserve, which features a visitor's centre, two viewing platforms, and a variety of saltmarsh vegetation and wintering wildfowl.
The beach offers a range of activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and walking along the South West Coast Path. There is also a children's play area with a skate park, and public toilets along the seafront. Dogs are not allowed on the centre of the beach between May 1st and September 30th, but are allowed at either end of the beach. A naturist area is also located at the far western end of the beach.
The beach occasionally suffers from algal blooms, which can affect the water quality. However, the beach is part of the Ancient World Heritage Coastline and is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a unique and special place to visit.
Budleigh Salterton Beach is on the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
