Charmouth West Beach is a beautiful and popular destination on the Dorset coast, known for its spectacular seascapes and rich fossil history.

Charmouth West Beach is located in Lyme Bay on the Dorset coast, forming part of the 96-mile long Jurassic Coast. The beach is a shingle and sand resort, approximately 680 metres wide, backed by cliffs and situated next to the mouth of the River Char. It is a popular spot for fossil hunters, families, and day trippers.

The beach divides into three sections: the Central Area, East Beach, and West Beach. The Central Area, located in front of the seafront car park and the Heritage Centre, is a good spot for swimmers and young families, with gently sloping sand at low tide. The Heritage Centre offers free admission and features visual displays and activities for children. Fossil Walks along the beach are organised from February to September and can be booked online.

A footbridge leads to the East Beach, which can be inaccessible at high tide. At low tide, this area has more sand than other parts of the beach and offers fine views over the cliffs of Stonebarrow Hill and Golden Cap. The West Beach, located between the River Char and Lyme Regis, is a good spot for walkers, but care must be taken to avoid being cut off by incoming tides.

There are restrictions on dog-walking, with different rules applying to each area of the beach. Visitors are advised to keep a safe distance from the cliffs due to the risk of rockfalls, and hammering at the cliff face is not permitted.

The beach is a great destination for those who enjoy exploring and discovering fossils. Visitors can walk to Lyme Regis, approximately 3 miles away, but must be mindful of tide times to avoid being cut off. Dog-walking is allowed all year round on the West Beach.

Charmouth West Beach is on the West Dorset Heritage Coast and the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
