Stretching nearly 17 miles from Portland in the southeast to West Bay in the northwest, Chesil beach is made up primarily of a huge bank of pebbles. The beach is almost straight, with just the hint of a concave curve as seen from the sea, and consistently around 15m high and 600m wide. The size of the pebbles increases from shingle sized at West Bay to larger pebbles at Portland.
The southeastern section of Chesil Beach backs onto The Fleet Lagoon, which was used by Barnes Wallace to test the bouncing bomb used by the Dambusters in WWII.
Chesil Beach is on the West Dorset Heritage Coast and the Jurassic Coast.
