Church Ope Cove is a sheltered pebble beach situated on the Isle of Portland, near Weymouth. The beach is approximately 700 metres wide and is backed by high cliffs and the settlement of Easton. It is formed by a large expanse of soft limestone pebbles and is surrounded by cliffs on three sides, which provide shelter from the often strong breeze in the area.
The beach faces south, making it a sun trap throughout the day. It is popular for swimming, snorkelling, and diving, although there is no lifeguard on duty. Visitors are advised to exercise caution when swimming, as the currents outside the direct cove area are strong. The beach offers stunning views of Rufus Castle, which overlooks the area from the clifftop. Visitors can also explore the nearby ruins of old St Andrew's Church, accessible via a footpath leading directly from Church Ope Cove.
The beach is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with a range of bird species and the occasional sighting of passing dolphins. However, accessing the beach requires walking down a flight of steep steps, which may be challenging for small children or less able visitors.
Nearby amenities include a cafe, a caravan park, and toilets. The beach is also dotted with privately owned beach huts, which are not usually available for rent.
