The safe sheltered bay of Swanage Central Beach is flanked by magnificent chalk headlands on either side. The gently sloping sands form a good 2km family beach with a promenade, providing all the facilities of a small seaside resort. The beach is surrounded by areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it an ideal location for those who want to discover and explore.
The beach offers a range of facilities, including a promenade, colourful gardens, beach huts, boats, deck chairs, loungers, and pedalos for hire. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, such as canoeing, kayaking, diving, snorkelling, fishing, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, and windsurfing. The beach also features a pier and amusements, crazy golf, and a seasonal lifeguard service from around the end of May to around mid-September.
The beach has designated swimming areas, marked with buoys, and a lost children centre. Dogs are not allowed on the central beach from 1 May to 30 September. There are several beach showers and public toilet facilities, including accessible toilets located at Shore Road, the Pier, Museum and Heritage Centre, and Mermond Place car park. Disabled access includes ramps onto the beach from the flat seafront.
Swanage Central Beach regularly wins awards, including the Blue Flag, which it has held for 20 years running. The beach also holds the Keep Britain Tidy Seaside Award and is Marine Conservation Society Recommended. The location is adjacent to both the South West and Bournemouth Coast Paths.
The area by the pier is known for being one of the best scuba diving areas on the south coast, with dive clubs and schools as well as individuals regularly diving to see the marine wildlife and wrecks in the area. Visitors can also see people fishing, as it is a popular place for anglers.
Swanage Central Beach is adjacent to the Bournemouth Coast Path and the South West Coast Path.
