The Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis is a long sand and pebble beach that forms part of Dorset's stunning Jurassic Coast, offering a unique combination of natural beauty and fossil hunting opportunities.

The Monmouth Beach stretches for approximately one mile, from the famous Cobb harbour wall to Pinhey Beach, and is characterised by a mix of sand and pebbles, with an increasing number of rocks towards the west. The beach is situated beneath the Ware Cliffs, which date back nearly 200 million years. However, visitors are warned to exercise caution due to the unstable nature of these cliffs.

Monmouth Beach is renowned for its fossil hunting opportunities, with a high likelihood of discovering ammonites, belemnites, and plant fossils during a walk along the beach. For those interested in fossil hunting, a visit to the fossil shop in Lyme Regis can be useful in learning what to look for.

The beach gets its name from the Duke of Monmouth, who landed there in 1685 in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow King James II. The harbour wall, known as The Cobb, has been in existence since at least 1313, with the current structure dating back to the early 19th century. The Cobb has been featured in several films, including "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and "Persuasion".

There is a pay car park with direct access to the beach, although it can fill up quickly during peak season. The car park is located next to a bowling green and toilets. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.

The Cobb harbour wall is a popular destination in its own right, offering panoramic views and breathtaking scenery. Visitors can walk along The Cobb, take sightseeing boat trips, go fishing or diving, or simply enjoy the sheltered sandy beach. However, dog owners should be aware that there are restrictions on dog access from April to October.

Lyme Regis Monmouth Beach is on the Jurassic Coast.
