Dawlish Warren Beach is a sand and shingle beach close to the Exe Estuary, making it a favourite among families. The beach is backed by sand dunes and open grassland, with distinctive red cliffs. The area is an internationally recognised nature reserve, designated as a Special Area of Conservation, and is home to over 600 different species of flowering plants.
The beach offers a range of facilities and amenities, including a lifeguard service during the main season, toilet facilities, and parking. However, access can be difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs due to the steep concrete steps and ramp down to the beach. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, such as go-karting, mini golf, and amusement rides, as well as water sports. Beach huts are also available for hire on a daily or weekly basis.
The Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve is a 1½ mile long sandspit that comprises grassland, sand dunes, and mudflats. The reserve is an important habitat for wading birds and wildfowl, and is home to hundreds of different flowering plants. Visitors can explore the reserve and enjoy excellent viewing opportunities from various hides.
Dogs are welcome on the beach, but there are certain restrictions in place. Dogs are allowed on the main beach all year round between groyne 4 and groyne 9, and on the tidal beach to the right of the lifeguard tower. However, dogs must be kept on leads within the nature reserve and in the resort.
Dawlish Warren Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, a prestigious award that recognises the beach's high standards of water quality, safety, and environmental management. The beach has held this award for over 20 years, and is also recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
