Sedgwell Cove, located near Kingsbridge in South Devon, is a popular destination for families and watersports enthusiasts, offering a unique beach experience with its large beaches, rock pools, and proximity to Burgh Island.
Sedgwell Cove is separated from Bantham by the River Avon. At low tide, two large beaches are exposed, allowing visitors to walk to Burgh Island. The cove is increasingly popular with holiday makers.
Bigbury-on-Sea, near Sedgwell Cove, offers a good stretch of clean, golden sand, safe, shallow waters perfect for paddling in, interesting rock pools to explore, and a good range of on-site facilities. The beach lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a pretty backdrop of rocky cliffs and rolling hills of the South Hams. 250 metres offshore lies Burgh Island with its iconic Art-Deco hotel. At low tide, the island is joined to the beach by a sandy causeway. When the tide is out, a sea tractor ferries passengers between the island and the beach.
Bigbury-on-Sea is a good place to try out kitesurfing, body boarding, and sea kayaking. The Discovery Surf School is situated on the beach and offers lessons in a variety of watersports as well as equipment hire. Other facilities on the beach include a beach shop, toilets, a first aid station, and a popular café. There is a lifeguard presence from May to September.
Bantham Beach, located near Sedgwell Cove, is backed by dunes at the mouth of the River Avon and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The sandy beach offers great views of Burgh Island and neighbouring Bigbury beach. This beach is best known for watersports, particularly surfing. The water can get a little chilly, so visitors are advised to grab a wetsuit and try body boarding, surfing, or just enjoy a swim in the sea.
The beach has a pay-for car park, accessible from Marine Drive. There is plenty of parking at Bantham Beach, although the road can be very narrow. On a hot bank holiday weekend, it can get very busy.
Sedgwell Cove is on the South Devon Heritage Coast.
