Hope Cove is a small cove of sand and rocks, approximately 370 metres wide, surrounded by cliffs, and situated on the Heritage Coastline. The cove has a rich history, having once been used by smugglers, but is now favoured by families and day trippers.
The cove consists of two sandy bays, Inner and Outer Hope, with Inner Hope being more sheltered and home to a small harbour tucked away behind the rocks at the northern end. The twin beaches back onto the charming village, which has plenty of facilities, making this a popular family beach. The northernmost, smaller of Hope Cove’s two beaches is also known as Mouthwell Sands, and benefits from a seasonal lifeguard service.
The village of Hope Cove lies in the shelter of Bolt Tail, within the wide arc of Bigbury Bay, and offers a range of facilities for visitors. The nearby Slapton Ley nature reserve attracts walkers and provides a unique opportunity to explore the local wildlife and natural beauty.
The beaches at Hope Cove offer a range of activities, including exploring rock pools, swimming, and sunbathing. Although tourism has surpassed fishing as the village’s main industry, there are still a few small boats operating from the harbour, offering a glimpse into the village’s fishing heritage.
Hope Cove is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
