Blackpool Sands is a crescent-shaped stretch of coarse golden sands surrounded by green fields, magnificent pines, craggy cliffs, and a turquoise blue sea. The beach is popular among families with small children and offers a range of activities and facilities.
The beach is situated at the northern end of Start Bay and is flanked by steep, wooded cliffs. It is a 2/3 mile long crescent of coarse golden sand, with some areas featuring coarser shingle. The beach is surrounded by lush countryside and offers stunning views.
Blackpool Sands offers a range of facilities, including toilets, showers, and disabled facilities. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months and offers a range of water sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkelling. There are also sandpits for children and a bathing raft. Equipment hire is available, and visitors can enjoy a range of activities, from swimming to fishing.
The beach has a privately managed car park, which is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and buggies. Parking costs around £10 for a full day, and dogs are not allowed in the car parks or on the beach from March to October. There is one food outlet, The Venus Cafe, Takeaway and Shop, which can get busy during peak season. The beach has won the Blue Flag award for its excellent water quality and facilities.
The beach is dog-friendly during the winter months, but dogs are restricted from March to November.
Blackpool Sands is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
