Great Mattiscombe Beach is a beautiful and exposed beach characterised by its interesting rock formations, sandy shores, and rolling hills and low-rise cliffs that back the beach. The beach is usually very quiet due to its somewhat inaccessible location.
The beach can only be accessed on foot via the South-West Coastal Path, which takes approximately 10 minutes to walk from the Start Point car park. The path begins on the right-hand side as you face the lighthouse. Due to the walking required to reach the beach, access is not suitable for those with mobility problems. Facilities at the beach are limited, with no amenities provided; however, a portaloo can be found in the Start Point car park.
The beach features spectacular rock formations that are most dramatic at low tide, although there are no rock pools to explore. Bathing is possible, but swimmers must be aware of rip tides and submerged rocks in the water, as there is no lifeguard on duty. The exposed nature of the beach and the scenic views of the surrounding bays and coves make it an ideal spot for those looking to enjoy coastal walks along the South-West Coastal Path.
Great Mattiscombe Beach is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
