Challaborough Beach is a sandy beach resort, approximately 350 metres wide, surrounded by cliffs and sand dunes. The beach is part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and features a sheltered horseshoe cove with rugged cliffs. The beach is a combination of rock and sand, making it an ideal location for building sand castles, exploring rock pools at low tide, and watching the sea swells.
The beach is surrounded by the Holiday Park, which has a private car park with spaces available for a fee. There are plenty of facilities, including public toilets, a café, and a beach shop in season. RNLI lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. A sloping path and slipway lead to the beach from the road, and there is a ramp at the northern end of the beach, plus concrete stairs and a handrail.
Challaborough Beach is a popular choice for bodyboarders and surfers of all levels. However, visitors are advised to be aware of strong undercurrents and large breaking waves in this location. It is also recommended that inflatables are not used when the weather is windy.
The Art Deco hotel on Burgh Island is visible from the bay, and at low tide, it’s possible to reach the island on foot. However, the island is completely covered by water when the tide is in.
Challaborough Beach is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
