Lee-on-Solent Beach is a pleasant and gently shelving shingle beach, overlooked by wide flat grass and suitable for recreation. The beach is adjacent to the shopping centre of Lee-on-the-Solent and faces south-west across the end of Southampton Water and the Solent, sheltered from the wind by the Isle of Wight. The beach is predominantly shingle with some sand intermixed and is accompanied by a promenade and a grassed area with an urban backdrop.
The beach offers a range of amenities, including restaurants, cafes, and a paved walkway that runs alongside the entire length of the beach. In the summer months, the beach has zoned areas for swimming, fishing, and other nautical activities. When the tide is out, rockpools are exposed, and crab-hunters can be seen searching amongst the rocks. Behind the beach, there are grassy areas suitable for games and picnics.
The town of Lee-on-the-Solent is steeped in aviation history, with seaplane trials started in 1915 and a base for seaplane training built in 1917. The town is now home to the Hovercraft Museum, open to the public on Saturdays. Visitors can also explore the nearby attractions, including the Solent beach path, which runs along the beach all the way from Browndown to Monks Hill.
In front of the main part of the beach, there is a free Splash Park and play area, skate park, and facilities, ideal for families with young children. For some entertainment, especially if it is raining, visitors can head to the arcade, which features classic arcade games, pool tables, and a cafe serving snacks and ice cream.
Dogs are banned in signed controlled areas between May 1 and September 30, but there are designated areas where dogs are allowed outside of these dates.
