A small sandy beach is nestled to the north of Whitehaven's Docks and Marina. During Georgian times, Whitehaven was a thriving hub of mining and shipping, with goods such as salt, coal, rum, and tobacco being imported and exported. Although these industries have long since disappeared, the area still retains many reminders of its past.
The small sand and pebble beach curves around the bay, making it a popular spot for sea-anglers and fossil hunters. The town of Whitehaven lies just behind the beach, featuring Georgian buildings, shops, restaurants, and parking facilities. At the southern end of the beach, a breakwater and the historic harbour of Whitehaven can be found, dating back to 1633. The chimney of Wellington Pits stands majestically over the harbour.
The area is home to several museums that tell the story of Whitehaven's industrial past. The Beacon Museum is dedicated to local history, while the Rum Story visitor centre, set in an original 18th-century building, brings the history of rum to life. Visitors can also take a cliff-top walk along the coast to St Bees Head and the RSPB Reserve, where they may spot terns, guillemots, and puffins. On clear days, views of the hills of Dumfries and Galloway and the Isle of Man can be seen from the cliffs.
Whitehaven was once one of the most important ports in the country during the 17th and 18th centuries, built on shipping and mining. The town has a rich maritime past and hosts Maritime Festivals regularly. Notably, the famous architect Sir John Rennie, who designed London Bridge, also built Whitehaven's West Pier.
Whitehaven Beach is adjacent to the Cumbria Coastal Way and the England Coast Path.
