Aberystwyth South Beach is situated in the middle of Cardigan Bay, providing a sheltered location for beachgoers. The beach measures approximately 350 metres in width and is located between the castle and the harbour breakwater, backed by the Edwardian town of Aberystwyth. The beach is a popular family seaside resort with plenty to do for children, including an Edwardian promenade, bandstand, and castle.
The sheltered, sloping sand and shingle beach is known for being quieter than the North Beach, which lies between the main harbour and Aberystwyth castle. During the summer months, lifeguards patrol the beach, providing a safe environment for families to swim. The southern end of the beach is a popular spot for surfers and bodyboarders, as the waves tend to be slightly larger. Visitors may also spot one of the resident porpoises, especially during warmer weather.
In the summer months, boat trips depart from Aberystwyth Harbour, offering excursions into Cardigan Bay in search of lobster, scallops, mackerel, and crab. Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round in designated areas, but restrictions apply from May 1 to September 30 on the northern part of the beach. RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach during the summer months (July to September), providing an added layer of safety for beachgoers.
Aberystwyth South Beach is adjacent to the Ceredigion Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
