Paignton Sands is a long, sandy beach approximately 800 metres wide, backed by a large town green. The beach is situated in Paignton, a former fishing village and popular Victorian holiday destination. Torbay, where Paignton is located, has Global Geopark status and is an SSSI, featuring limestone grasslands, rare plants, and lichens.
The beach offers a range of activities and amenities, including calm and shallow waters suitable for paddling, boat and pedalo hire, and deckchair rental. Paignton Pier is a central feature of the beach, with its amusement arcade, bouncy castle, giant slide, bumper cars, and numerous kiosks and cafes. Other attractions include donkey rides, a play park, and crazy golf. The beach is adjacent to Paignton Green, a large grassy area suitable for playing games.
Paignton Sands is well-adapted for people with additional mobility needs, with wheelchair access to the pier and toilets for people with disabilities. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach between May and September, although they are welcome at other times of year and have a dedicated area on the green.
The beach is a popular destination for families, with excellent swimming conditions and a range of traditional seaside amusements. Brightly coloured beach huts line the sea front, and pedalos and boats are available for hire. While dogs are restricted from the beach during the summer months (1 May to 30 September), they are allowed on the beach during the winter.
