Tynemouth Long Sands North Beach boasts a half-mile stretch of fine golden sand backed by sand dunes, providing a rural-style beach experience in a very urban location. The beach features a rocky point with plenty of opportunities to explore the rock pools exposed as the tide ebbs. As a gently sloping sandy resort beach, the designated bathing beach measures approximately 500 metres in length and is located at the northern end of a one-kilometre bay.
The northern end of Long Sands beach is a stunning stretch of golden sand, backed by low dunes. In summer, it is one of the most popular spots on the North East coast, attracting visitors who come to build sand castles, sunbathe, or splash about in the clean waters. In winter, it is an ideal destination for a bracing walk and is also one of the area's best surfing beaches, having hosted the national surfing championships. The powerful waves make it a popular destination for surfing.
Adjacent to the beach, on the other side of Grand Parade, is Tynemouth Park, a family fun park featuring a boating lake, crazy golf, and themed children's play areas. The Aquarium, also nearby, offers a good variety of interesting sea-life, making it an excellent spot for families to visit. Ramps at either end of the beach provide good access onto the sand.
Another nearby beach is Cullercoats beach, a small sandy bay in Tyne and Wear popular with families in the summer season. The beach is enclosed by two small piers and features the Cullercoats Lifeboat Station on the northern end. This beach is dog-friendly, with restrictions from May 1 to September 30.
