Whitley Bay is a long strip of sandy beach with a number of rocky outcrops, making it an ideal location for young children to explore rockpools. The beach is backed by many amenities, including a leisure pool, shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs, and a mini golf course. The award-winning area of Whitley Bay is located at the southern end of the beach, which is bordered on its northern end by a nature reserve and St Mary's Island.
The beach offers a range of activities, including surfing, canoeing, and kayaking. The promenade is a popular spot for walking, with views over the North Sea. The area is also popular with walkers, and there are plenty of other activities to enjoy, including nightlife in Whitley Bay itself and annual sandcastle competitions on the beach. The Links golfing area runs right behind the beach, and the Edwardian Spanish City has recently been relaunched with various dining options.
Whitley Bay has a lifeguard service, and while dogs are allowed on the beach to the north of Panama Gardens, there is a ban on dogs on the rest of the beach between 1 May to 30 September. The beach is easy to reach by car, bus, and the local Metro transit service, with plenty of parking available, although it can get very busy in high season.
Whitley Bay has been awarded the Blue Flag award, recognising its excellent water quality and safe bathing conditions. The beach hosts an annual sandcastle competition in the summer, which is popular with locals and visitors alike.
