Brighton Central Beach is situated on the Sussex coast of the English Channel and serves as a central attraction for the resort. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand, with a steep gravel slope that levels off towards low water. Behind the beach lies the bustling Brighton promenade, which offers a range of resort facilities.
The beach is surrounded by various local attractions, including the refurbished Brighton Pier, fun fairs, arcades, and local boutique shopping in The Lanes. Visitors can also enjoy the cafe culture and the annual Summer Pride Week festival. Water sports activities such as windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and wakeboarding are popular on the beach. Additionally, there is a free paddling pool for kids and volleyball courts that are set up each summer.
The beach has a 4-mile promenade that is lined with amusements, restaurants, and shops. The iconic Palace Pier stretches 1,722 feet into the sea and features fairground rides, arcade games, and a classic carousel. The Sea Life Centre, which is said to be the oldest aquarium in the world, is located next to the pier and is home to over 5,000 sea creatures.
The beach is within walking distance of the town and shops, and there are car parks nearby (fees apply) and a regular bus service. The eastern end of Brighton Beach is an official naturist beach, which was the first in the UK when it opened in 1980. The beachfront hosts various events throughout the year, including the Burning the Clocks winter solstice celebrations and the annual New Year Swim.
The beach is dog friendly during the winter months, but there are restrictions in some areas from 1st May to 30th September. Lifeguards are on watch during the summer months, and water sports activities are available.
