Christchurch Friars Cliff is located in Christchurch Bay, approximately 13 kilometres wide from Hengitsbury Head to Hurst Castle. The beach is a sandy resort, approximately 850 metres wide, backed by a promenade and beach huts. The terrain is mainly sand, although patches of shingle add interest to the beach.
The beach offers a range of facilities, including beach huts available for hire, The Beach Hut Café, open all year round, toilets with disabled access, and showers. Car parking is available at Southcliffe Road and Seaway Avenue, both with disabled access routes down to the promenade. The beach is a designated bathing area and has a lifeguard during the summer months.
Visitors to the beach can enjoy fine views over Hurst Spit, the Purbeck Hills, and the Isle of Wight. The promenade provides easy access to the beach for pushchairs and visitors with mobility problems. A designated water sports area is located adjacent to the concrete wave wall at Steamer Point. The beach is also a good starting point for a clifftop walk through the 24-acre Steamer Point Nature Reserve to 19th-century Highcliffe Castle.
The beach is kept clean, and dogs are not permitted from the start of May until the start of October.
Christchurch Friar's Cliff Beach is adjacent to the Bournemouth Coast Path.
