Craig Du Beach is situated at the northern edge of the mouth of Tremadog Bay, backed by Snowdonia National Park and an estuary. The beach is an area of sand with dunes, forming the northerly part of Black Rock Sands beach. The large expanse of hard-packed flat sand allows car access, which is regulated by a seasonal Council warden.
The beach is popular with kite-buggies and kite surfers, and its gentle gradient also attracts bathers. The area provides a rich feeding ground for various bird species. A rocky headland at the western end of the bay offers rock pools, exposed caverns, and a multi-coloured rock face to explore at low tide. The beach is also a popular spot for picnics, motor boats, and water bikes, with a designated zone for their use. Access onto the beach for disabled people is good.
The western end of Morfa Bychan beach, commonly known as Black Rock Sands or Craig Du, is an expansive sandy beach with a large, rocky headland at its western end. The beach stretches for about 2 miles, backed by a dune system designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A river mouth lies at the south-eastern end of the beach, and the village of Morfa Bychan is nearby. The beach offers lovely views of the mountains and countryside of Snowdonia National Park. A slipway provides vehicular access to the sands, and most visitors park on the beach, making it a popular picnic destination and providing easy access for those with mobility problems.
There is a 10mph speed limit on the beach, and visitors are advised to check the tide times to avoid getting caught out. There are designated bathing and boat launching areas. A seasonal dog ban applies to this end of the beach during the summer, while the rest of the beach is dog-friendly year-round.
The surrounding area offers a range of facilities, including holiday parks, shops, places to eat, and a golf club in the village of Morfa Bychan. More facilities can be found in the town of Porthmadog, about 2 miles from the beach. The Morfa Bychan, North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, backs the eastern side of the beach.
