Craster Beach is characterised by its rocky coastline and shingle foreshore, with a small harbour that was built by the Craster family in commemoration of Captain John Craster, who died in a Tibetan campaign in 1906. The harbour is home to a small number of fishing boats, and during the summer months, fishing trips can be organised.
The village of Craster is famous for its smoked kippers, art galleries, and bracing coastal walks. Visitors can try the legendary Craster Kippers at one of the local pubs, and explore the village's fishing history. There is a car park behind the Tourist Office, with toilets available, but visitors are warned to park within designated bays to avoid receiving a ticket.
The area offers a number of scenic coastal walks, including a popular walk to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, which is accessible on foot. The castle ruins are amongst the most photographed in the country, and offer a striking picture of rocks and ruins set against the untamed sea. Visitors may also spot seals, eider ducks, and a variety of waders and other birds along the shoreline.
The Northumberland Coast Path stretches between Craster and Seahouses, covering a distance of around 10 miles. This path offers perfect coastal walks all year round, with stunning views of the coastline and surrounding landscape.
Craster was once a centre for herring fishing, and the smoked kippers from the area were exported throughout Europe. Today, only one smokehouse remains, operated by fine fish merchants L.Robson & Sons Ltd.
Craster Beach is on the North Northumberland Heritage Coast.
