Bamburgh Castle Beach is a 2.5 kilometre long, remote, sandy beach situated on the north Northumberland coast. The beach slopes gently, resulting in a long distance to the sea at low tide, and features the Mill Burn crossing it. The beach is backed by large sand dunes and offers beautiful views towards the Farne Islands.
The beach is dominated by the majestic Bamburgh Castle, a Norman stronghold that towers over the wide expanse of pristine, sandy beach. The castle has a rich history, with the oldest part of the present structure dating back to the 12th century. Visitors can explore the castle and enjoy its extensive collection of arms and armour. Opposite the beach lie the Inner Farne Islands, home to hermits and monks from the 7th century until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century.
The beach offers a range of activities, including long, wind-swept walks, playing in the waves, building sandcastles, and beach games. The water temperatures may not be warm, even in the height of summer, but the beach is perfect for a visit at any time of year. The beach is also a popular spot for surfing, with consistent waves and surf hire and lessons available. Visitors can also explore the nearby Stags Rocks, featuring a white stag painted on the rocks, and discover interesting rock pools and a small lighthouse.
The dunes of Sandy Hills, located behind the beach, are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including some rare insects. This area has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The beach at Bamburgh is an award-winning golden sandy beach that stretches for just under 3 miles, starting at Harkness Rocks and leading to Seahouses. The beach offers spectacular views of Lindisfarne, Holy Island, and the Farne Islands. Visitors can walk through the dunes, explore the village, and stop in at one of the three pubs for refreshments. The beach is also dog friendly all year round.
Bamburgh Castle Beach is on the North Northumberland Heritage Coast.
