Polridmouth Cove is situated just south of Menabilly and consists of two secluded sandy beaches that are joined together at low tide. The beach is accessible by foot or by boat, and there are no facilities available. The South West Coast Path runs along this unspoilt beach, making it a great spot for walkers and those looking to escape the crowds.
Polridmouth Cove has a rich history, having once served as a hideout for smugglers who trafficked goods like brandy and tobacco. The beach is also famously linked to author Daphne du Maurier, who lived at the nearby Menabilly estate. The beach inspired the setting for her novel “Rebecca,”.
While there are no lifeguard services, the beach is considered relatively safe for swimming due to its sheltered nature. At low tide, the beach reveals more sandy areas and rock pools, making it a great spot for exploration. Polridmouth Beach is dog-friendly year-round, making it a popular choice for dog walkers.
The beach is completely covered at high tide, and access is by foot or by boat. Visitors should be aware that the beach is only accessible at low tide, and care should be taken when walking along the coast path.
