Porthnanven is a rocky beach situated just to the south of Cape Cornwall, which is said to be the westernmost point of England. The beach lies on the South West Coast Path, a popular route for walkers who come to enjoy the spectacular sea views. The beach is located at the end of a long, winding valley that passes from lush greenery to mining-scarred terrain.
The beach is characterised by huge granite boulders that have been worn smooth over the years, many of which are almost spherical in shape. These boulders have become a distinctive feature of the beach, and were once popular with visitors who would remove them to use as garden ornaments. However, the council had to intervene to prevent this, and the boulders remain in place. The beach is also a haven for seabirds, and visitors can spot numerous species in the area.
The only way to access Porthnanven is by following the footpaths that lead to the beach. While it is safe for swimming, visitors should exercise caution due to the natural conditions and lack of lifeguard services. At low tide, a small sandy area is exposed, and visitors can also explore the nearby coves and rock formations.
Looking out to sea, visitors can see two off-shore rock formations known as The Brisons. Further along the coast path, another small cove called Progo Beach can be reached, which features an arch formed in the rock at low tide.
St Just Beach is on the Penwith Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
