Porthcothan Beach is a north-west facing long sandy cove, approximately 400 metres wide, surrounded by cliffs and backed by sand dunes. These dunes provide shelter from the prevailing winds, making the beach an ideal spot for families. The beach is also home to a stream that flows across the sand.
The beach is situated in a rural area and is characterised by its sheltered location, which makes it less suitable for surfers. However, the sheltered nature of the bay also makes it an attractive spot for families with children. Two smaller coves, Long Cove and Totty Cove, are inset into the cliffs on the northern side of the beach.
Porthcothan Beach offers a range of amenities, including a car park, bus stop, and nearby self-catering and B&B accommodations. The village nearby provides additional amenities, and there are also camping facilities in the area. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the day in the summer, and the South West Coast Path runs along the cliff top overlooking the bay.
Porthcothan Beach is dog-friendly all year round, making it an ideal destination for pet owners. The beach's location, between Padstow and Newquay, also makes it easily accessible by car or public transport.
