Portreath Beach is a sand and shingle beach set in a bay, backed by cliffs on one side and a pier and car park on the other. A stream runs down the middle of the beach to the sea, adding to the beach's natural charm. The beach is approximately 520 metres wide and offers a range of facilities, including sandchair hire.
Portreath Beach is situated on the north coast of Cornwall, just north of Redruth. The beach is set in a steep valley and bounded by high cliffs on one side and a historic harbour on the other. The beach itself is primarily sandy with some shingle below the shoreline.
The beach is well-suited for families, with lifeguard services available during the summer months to ensure safety. Portreath Beach is popular with surfers and bodyboarders, particularly for its surf break known as “The Vortex,” a powerful reef break off the harbour wall. The beach also has a tidal pool on the north side, providing a sheltered spot for swimming.
Portreath was once a busy harbour exporting copper. Visitors to the beach can look out to sea towards Gull Rock, located a few hundred meters offshore, which is a haven for seabirds. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach during the summer months.
Portreath Beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
